Brown seaweeds contain a variety of saccharides which have potential industrial uses. The most abundant polysaccharide in brown seaweed is typically alginate, consisting of mannuronic (M) and guluronic acid (G). The ratio of these residues fundamentally determines the physicochemical properties of alginate. In the present study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to give a detailed breakdown of the monosaccharide species in North Atlantic brown seaweeds. The anthrone method was used for determination of crystalline cellulose. The experimental data was used to calibrate multivariate prediction models for estimation of total carbohydrates, crystalline cellulose, total alginate and alginate M/G ratio directly in dried, brown seaweed using three types of infrared spectroscopy, using relative error (RE) as a measure of predictive accuracy. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) performed well for the estimation of total alginate (RE = 0.12, R2 = 0.82), and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) showed good prediction of M/G ratio (RE = 0.14, R2 = 0.86). Both DRIFTS, ATR and near infrared (NIR) were unable to predict crystalline cellulose and only DRIFTS performed better in determining total carbohydrates. Multivariate spectral analysis is a promising method for easy and rapid characterization of alginate and M/G ratio in seaweed.

Background: Pleuroparenchymal Fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a rare disease that consists of elastofibrosis that involves the pleura and subpleural lung parenchyma; it is an unusual pulmonary disease with unique clinical, radiological and pathological characteristics. According to recent studies, PPFE may not be a definite disease but a form of chronic lung injury. The aim of this retrospective study is to determine the incidence and to evaluate the distribution, severity and progression of this radiological entity on high-resolution CT (HRCT) exams of the chest, performed in routine clinical practice. In total, 1514 HRCT exams performed in the period January 2016-June 2018 were analyzed. For each exam, the presence of PPFE was evaluated and a quantitative score was assigned (from 0 to 7 points, based on the maximum depth of fibrotic involvement of the parenchyma). When available, two exams with a time interval of at least 6 months were compared for each patient in order to evaluate progression (defined as the increase in the disease score). Patients were divided into different groups according to exposure and their associated diseases. Statistical analysis was performed by using the Wilcoxon test and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: PPFE was detected in 174 out of 1514 patients (11.6%), with a mean score of 6.1 ± 3.9 (range 1-14). In 106 out of 174 patients (60.9%), a previous CT scan was available and an evolution of PPFE was detected in 19 of these (11.5%). Among these 19 patients with worsening PPFE, 4 had isolated PPFE that was associated with chronic exposure or connective tissue disorders, and the other 15 had an associated lung disease and/or a chronic exposure. In this group, it was found that the ventral segments of the upper lobes, fissures and apical segments of the lower lobes had a greater statistically significant involvement in the progression of the disease compared to the non-progressive group. In 16 of 174 patients (9.2%, 7 of which belonged to the radiological progression group) a biopsy through video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery or apicoectomy confirmed PPFE. Conclusion: PPFE-like lesions are not uncommon on HRCT exams in routine clinical practice, and are frequently found in patients with different forms of chronic lung injury. Further studies are necessary to explain why the disease progresses in some cases, while in most, it remains stationary over time.

Green microalgae is a possible feedstock for the production of biofuels, chemicals, food/feed, and medical products. Large-scale microalgae production requires large quantities of water and nutrients, directing the attention to wastewater as a cultivation medium. Wastewater-cultivated microalgae could via wet thermochemical conversion be valorised into products for e.g., water treatment. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was used to process microalgae polycultures grown in municipal wastewater. The objective was to perform a systematic examination of how carbonization temperature, residence time, and initial pH affected solid yield, composition, and properties. Carbonization temperature, time and initial pH all had statistically significant effects on hydrochar properties, with temperature having the most pronounced effect; the surface area increased from 8.5 to 43.6 m2 g-1 as temperature was increased from 180 to 260 °C. However, hydrochars produced at low temperature and initially neutral pH generally had the highest capacity for methylene blue adsorption. DRIFTS analysis of the hydrochar revealed that the pH conditions changed the functional group composition, implying that adsorption was electrostatic interactions driven. This study concludes that un-activated hydrochars from wastewater grown microalgae produced at relatively low hydrothermal carbonization temperatures adsorb methylene blue, despite having low surface area.

CT urography is a single term used to refer to different scanning protocols that can be applied for a number of clinical indications. If, on the one hand, this highlights the role of the radiologist in deciding the most suitable technique to perform according to the patient's needs, on the other hand, a certain confusion may arise due to the different technical and clinical variables that have to be taken into account. This has been well demonstrated by a previous work based on an online questionnaire administered to a population of Italian radiologists that brought out similarities as well as differences across the national country. Defining precise guidelines for each clinical scenario, although desirable, is a difficult task to accomplish, if not even unfeasible. According to the prementioned survey, five relevant topics concerning CT urography have been identified: definition and clinical indications, opacification of the excretory system, techniques, post-processing reconstructions, and radiation dose and utility of dual-energy CT. The aim of this work is to deepen and share knowledge about these main points in order to assist the radiology in the daily practice. Moreover, a synopsis of recommendations agreed by the Italian board of genitourinary imaging is provided.

Microalgal biomass may have biostimulating effects on plants and seeds due to its phytohormonal content, and harnessing this biostimulating effect could contribute to sustainable agriculture. Two Nordic strains of freshwater microalgae species Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus were each cultivated in a photobioreactor receiving untreated municipal wastewater. The algal biomass and the supernatant after algal cultivation were tested on tomato and barley seeds for biostimulating effects. Intact algal cells, broken cells, or harvest supernatant were applied to the seeds, and germination time, percentage and germination index were evaluated. Seeds treated with C. vulgaris, in particular intact cells or supernatant, had up to 25 percentage units higher germination percentage after 2 days and an overall significantly faster germination time (germinated on average between 0.5 and 1 day sooner) than seeds treated with S. obliquus or the control (water). The germination index was higher in C. vulgaris treatments than in the control for both tomato and barley, and this was observed for both broken and intact cells as well as supernatant. The Nordic strain of C. vulgaris cultivated in municipal wastewater thus shows potential for use as biostimulant in agriculture, adding novel economic and sustainability benefits.

RESUMO

Metabolic and overload disorders are a heterogeneous group of relatively uncommon but important diseases. While imaging plays a key role in the early detection and accurate diagnosis in specific organs with a pivotal role in several metabolic pathways, most of these diseases affect different tissues as part of a systemic syndromes. Moreover, since the symptoms are often vague and phenotypes similar, imaging alterations can present as incidental findings, which must be recognized and interpreted in the light of further biochemical and histological investigations. Among imaging modalities, MRI allows, thanks to its multiparametric properties, to obtain numerous information on tissue composition, but many metabolic and accumulation alterations require a multimodal evaluation, possibly using advanced imaging techniques and sequences, not only for the detection but also for accurate characterization and quantification. The purpose of this review is to describe the different alterations resulting from metabolic and overload pathologies in organs and tissues throughout the body, with particular reference to imaging findings.

Seaweed is considered a potentially sustainable source of protein for human consumption, and rapid, accurate methods for determining seaweed protein contents are needed. Seaweeds contain substances which interfere with common protein estimation methods however. The present study compares the Lowry and BCA protein assays and protein determination by N-ratios to more novel spectroscopic methods. Linear regression of the height or the integrated area under the Amide II band of diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to predict seaweed protein with good prediction performance. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was performed on both DRIFTS and near-infrared (NIR) spectra, with even higher prediction accuracy. Spectroscopy performed similar to or better than the calculated N-ratio of 4.14 for protein prediction. These spectral prediction methods require minimal sample preparation and chemical use, and are easy to perform, making them environmentally sustainable and economically viable for rapid estimation of seaweed protein.

The production potential of a locally isolated Chlorella vulgaris strain and a local green-algae consortium, used in municipal wastewater treatment combined with CO2 sequestration from flue gases, was evaluated for the first time by comparing the elemental and biochemical composition and heating value of the biomass produced. The microalgae were grown in outdoor pilot-scale ponds under subarctic summer conditions. The impact of cultivation in a greenhouse climate was also tested for the green-algae consortium; additionally, the variation in species composition over time in the three ponds was investigated. Our results showed that the biomass produced in the consortium/outdoor pond had the greatest potential for bioenergy production because both its carbohydrates and lipids contents were significantly higher than the biomasses from the consortium/greenhouse and C. vulgaris/outdoor ponds. Although greenhouse conditions significantly increased the consortium biomass's monounsaturated fatty acid content, which is ideal for biodiesel production, an undesirable increase in ash and chemical elements, as well as a reduction in heating value, were also observed. Thus, the placement of the pond inside a greenhouse did not improve the production potential of the green-algae consortium biomass in the current study infrastructure and climate conditions.

This study presented a novel methodology to predict microalgae chlorophyll content from colour models using linear regression and artificial neural network. The analysis was performed using SPSS software. Type of extractant solvents and image indexes were used as the input data for the artificial neural network calculation. The findings revealed that the regression model was highly significant, with high R2 of 0.58 and RSME of 3.16, making it a useful tool for predicting the chlorophyll concentration. Simultaneously, artificial neural network model with R2 of 0.66 and low RMSE of 2.36 proved to be more accurate than regression model. The model which fitted to the experimental data indicated that acetone was a suitable extraction solvent. In comparison to the cyan-magenta-yellow-black model in image analysis, the red-greenblue model offered a better correlation. In short, the estimation of chlorophyll concentration using prediction models are rapid, more efficient, and less expensive.

Overgrowth of microalgae will result in harmful algae blooms that can affect the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, the quantitation of chlorophyll pigments can be used as an indicator of algae bloom. However, it is difficult to monitor the geographical and temporal distribution of chlorophyll in the aquatic environment. Accordingly, an innovative and inexpensive method based on the red-green-blue (RGB) image analysis was utilized in this study to estimate the microalgae chlorophyll content. The digital images were acquired using a smartphone camera. The colour index was then evaluated using software and associated with chlorophyll concentration significantly. A regression model, using RGB colour components as independent variables to estimate chlorophyll concentration, was developed and validated. The Green in the RGB index was the most promising way to estimate chlorophyll concentration in microalgae. The result showed that acetone was the best extractant solvent with a high R-squared value among the four extractant solvents. Next, the isolation of useful biomolecules, such as proteins, fatty acids, polysaccharides and antioxidants from the microalgae, has been recognized as an alternative to regulating algae bloom. Microalgae are shown to produce bioactive compounds with a variety of biological activities that can be applied in various industries. This study evaluates the biochemical composition of mixed microalgae species, Desmodesmus sp. and Scenedesmus sp. using the liquid triphasic partitioning (TPP) system. The findings from analytical assays revealed that the biomass consisted of varied concentrations of carbohydrates, protein, and lipids. Phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were at 60.22 mg/L and 90.69%, respectively.

Central nervous system localization of multiple myeloma (CNS-MM) accounts for about 1% of all MM during disease course or even rarer at diagnosis. A difference in the origin, i.e., osteodural or primary dural vs leptomeningeal/intraparenchymal, seems to define two distinct types of intracranial myeloma, with different clinical behavior. CNS-MM may occur also as a presentation of MM. Treatment is still unsatisfactory and many treatments have been reported: chemotherapy, intrathecal therapy, and radiotherapy, with dismal prognosis. Other sites of myeloma localization could be also of interest and deserve description. Because of the rarity and aggressiveness of the disease clinicians are often doubtful on how to treat it since there is no general agreement. Moreover, recent drugs such as the anti CD38 monoclonal antibody, immunomodulatory drugs, and proteasome inhibitors have changed the treatment of patients with MM with a significant improvement in overall response and survival. The role of novel agents in CNS MM management and unusual presentations will be discussed as well as the potential role of other new immunomodulatory drugs and proteasome inhibitors that seem to cross the blood-brain barrier. The purpose of this review is to increase awareness of the clinical unusual presentation and neuroradiological findings, give practical diagnostic advice and treatment options algorithm.

Computed tomography-urography is currently the imaging modality of choice for the assessment of the whole urinary tract, giving the possibility to detect and characterize benign and malignant conditions. In particular, computed tomography-urography takes advantage from an improved visualization of the urinary collecting system due to acquisition of delayed scan obtained after excretion of intravenous contrast medium from the kidneys. Nevertheless, the remaining scans are of great help for identification, characterization, and staging of urological tumors. Considering the high number of diseases, urinary segment potentially involved and patients' features, scanning protocols of computed tomography-urography largely vary from one clinical case to another as well as selection and previous preparation of the patient. According to the supramentioned considerations, radiation exposure is also of particular concern. Italian radiologists were asked to express their opinions about computed tomography-urography performance and about its role in their daily practice through an online survey. This paper collects and summarizes the results.

RESUMO

Dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) imaging is a non-invasive technique used for the evaluation of tissue vascularity features through imaging series acquisition after contrast medium administration. Over the years, the study technique and protocols have evolved, seeing a growing application of this method across different imaging modalities for the study of almost all body districts. The main and most consolidated current applications concern MRI imaging for the study of tumors, but an increasing number of studies are evaluating the use of this technique also for inflammatory pathologies and functional studies. Furthermore, the recent advent of artificial intelligence techniques is opening up a vast scenario for the analysis of quantitative information deriving from DCE. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive update on the techniques, protocols, and clinical applications - both established and emerging - of DCE in whole-body imaging.

PURPOSE: Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a misdiagnosed and dangerous condition. To our knowledge, a comprehensive evaluation of CT parameters that can predict the outcome of patients suffering from NOMI is still missing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Contrast-enhanced CT examination of 84 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of NOMI (37 with clinical and laboratory confirmation and 47 biopsy or surgery proven) was retrospectively reviewed by assessing vessels, mesentery, bowel, and peritoneal cavity CT quantitative and dichotomous parameters, and data were analyzed with Fisher's test. Diameter of superior mesenteric artery (SMA), celiac trunk (CT), inferior vena cava (IVC), superior mesenteric vein (SMV), and differences in CT HU (Delta HU) of the bowel wall before and after intravenous contrast media (ICM) administration were correlated to the patients' outcome using ANOVA test. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were elaborated after a binary logistic regression was performed. RESULTS: Increased number and diameter of vessels, bowel wall thickening, and hypervascularity were more frequent in patients with good prognosis. Conversely, pale mesentery, paper thin, hypovascularity, and aeroportia were more frequent in patients with bad prognosis. A significant correlation between diameters of SMA, CT, IVC, IMA, and SMV and outcome was found at univariate analysis. Also Delta HU resulted to be correlated with the outcome. At multivariate analysis only IVC and Delta HU were significant (p = 0.038 and 0.01) and the combined AUC resulted in 0.806 (CI 0.708-0.903). CONCLUSION: Dichotomous signs of reperfusion and quantitative CT parameters can predict the outcome of patients with NOMI. In particular the combination of IVC diameter and Delta HU of bowel wall allows to predict the prognosis with the highest accuracy.

OBJECTIVES: Written radiological report remains the most important means of communication between radiologist and referring medical/surgical doctor, even though CT reports are frequently just descriptive, unclear, and unstructured. The Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) and the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer (GIRCG) promoted a critical shared discussion between 10 skilled radiologists and 10 surgical oncologists, by means of multi-round consensus-building Delphi survey, to develop a structured reporting template for CT of GC patients. METHODS: Twenty-four items were organized according to the broad categories of a structured report as suggested by the European Society of Radiology (clinical referral, technique, findings, conclusion, and advice) and grouped into three "CT report sections" depending on the diagnostic phase of the radiological assessment for the oncologic patient (staging, restaging, and follow-up). RESULTS: In the final round, 23 out of 24 items obtained agreement ( ≥ 8) and consensus ( ≤ 2) and 19 out 24 items obtained a good stability (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The structured report obtained, shared by surgical and medical oncologists and radiologists, allows an appropriate, clearer, and focused CT report essential to high-quality patient care in GC, avoiding the exclusion of key radiological information useful for multidisciplinary decision-making. KEY POINTS: • Imaging represents the cornerstone for tailored treatment in GC patients. • CT-structured radiology report in GC patients is useful for multidisciplinary decision making.

Since SARS-CoV-2 emerged in 2019, strict monitoring of post-COVID-19 patients in order to ensure the early detection of sequelae and/or chronic organ damage that could been associated with the infection has been essential. Potential involvement of the NO pathway in the development of post-COVID-19 lung fibrotic alterations is feasible, since the majority of respiratory cells can produce NO, and fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) represents a biomarker of airway inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential utility of multiple-flow FeNO parameters in a post-COVID-19 population and to compare it with other indicators of lung damage proposed in the literature. We enrolled 20 patients hospitalized for COVID-19, who underwent clinical, respiratory functional (including PFTs and FeNO) and radiological follow-up after discharge. Compared with age- and sex-matched healthy controls, post-COVID-19 patients showed significantly higher FeNO 350 mL/s and CaNO levels. Moreover, among the parameters included in the follow-up, CaNO showed the best accuracy in indicating predominant fibrotic changes and GGO at CT scan. To our knowledge, this preliminary study has investigated for the first time multiple-flow FeNO parameters in a post-COVID-19 population. The evidence of increased CaNO values may imply the persistence of alveolar and bronchiolar inflammation and/or a mild impairment of the alveolar-capillary membrane in these patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intraabdominal hemorrhage secondary to liver and kidney injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Endovascular arterial embolization is an established interventional radiology technique used to treat active bleeding, and its role in managing abdominal hemorrhages is growing, given the increasing trend for conservative treatment. Our study aims to retrospectively evaluate the technical and clinical results and the possible complications of arterial embolization procedures performed in emergency, in post-traumatic, iatrogenic, and pathological hepatic and renal bleedings. METHODS: We performed a ten-year, single-center retrospective survey (from January 2010 to December 2019) of all patients treated in emergency by intra-arterial embolization of liver and kidney bleeding. Preliminary CT angiography studies were evaluated, as well as the angiographic findings. Materials used, procedural data, and clinical outcomes, including complications, were recorded. RESULTS: The diagnostic angiography showed a single source of bleeding in 20 cases (66.7%), two bleeding vessels in 4 cases (13.3%), and multiple hemorrhagic sources in 6 cases (20%). All bleeding sources were successfully embolized; in 12 patients (40%), complete embolization was achieved with coils and 18 patients (60%) with hemostatic sponges. In one case, a second embolization procedure was performed for the persistence of hemodynamic instability. No major post-procedural complications were recorded. The mean procedure duration was 65.1 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our experience and literature data, the treatment of endovascular embolization in acute abdominal bleeding of hepatic and renal origin represents the treatment of choice, as it can provide complete therapeutic success in hemodynamically stable patients. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recently, there has been a growing interest in the use of Dixon sequence for knee MRI in order to save time spent on the scanner, and improving diagnostic utility. Our purpose was to compare the diagnostic performance of Dixon sequence on low-field MRI with the proton-density sequence on high-field MRI. METHODS: This prospective study included 40 patients who underwent 0.25T knee MRI, using the routine protocol with the addition of a sagittal 4-point Dixon sequence (SPED), and an additional sequence on 1.5T scanner, consisting in a fat-suppressed proton-density fast-spin-echo (FS PD-FSE). Two radiologists independently examined the images, evaluating the anatomic identification score and diagnostic performances of the two sequences. Interreader agreement was evaluated using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Final population counted 34 patients (36 knee MR images) with a mean age of 52.9 years (range, 18-75 years). Interreader agreement was very high except for cartilage injuries at medial femoral condyle and medial tibial plateau (ICC SPED: 0.757, ICC FS PD-FSE: 0.746), even if not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), artifacts presence and diagnostic confidence between SPED and PD-FS sequence. CONCLUSIONS: Dixon sequences on low-field scanner have a comparable diagnostic accuracy to PD-FS sequence obtained on a high field scanner for knee MR imaging. (www.actabiomedica.it).

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to compare two dynamic imaging modalities employed to study peripheral lymphatic system, Magnetic Resonance Lymphangiography (MRL) and Indocyanine Green Lymphangiography (ICGL), evaluating their role for planning lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) or other surgical-nonsurgical treatments in patients with lymphedema of the extremities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 32 patients (26 women) with a mean age of 38 years (range 18-73) enrolled from January 2014 to December 2018; 20 out of 32 were affected by lower limb lymphedema with 6 cases of primary lymphedema; all of them had stage II disease. All the patient underwent ICGL and MRL within a month of one another, by injecting different contrast medium into interdigital web spaces. In each patient we rated the number of lymphatic vessels visualized, considering the wrist for the upper limb and the ankle for the lower limb. Student's t-test was applied. RESULTS: All patients completed both the diagnostic examinations without any significant complications. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found between the number of lymphatic vessels identified on the wrist/ankle (34 on ICGL vs 70 on MRL and 82 on ICGL vs 26 on MRL, considering affected and healthy limbs respectively). In particular, dermal backflow in advanced lymphedema seems to hinder lymphatic vessels detection on ICGL. Conversely, on healthy limbs, MRL hardly identifies lymphatics, because of their fast lymphatic flow and almost virtual lumen. CONCLUSIONS: Both MRL and ICGL are dynamic diagnostic modalities that permit an effective evaluation of lymphatic vessels anatomical and functional status in extremities lymphedema these diagnostic procedures may be considered complementary because they show different aspects of lymphatic system. RESUMO

CT-guided percutaneous drainage is a safe and effective procedure that allows minimally invasive treatment of abdominopelvic abscesses and fluid collections. This technique has become an alternative for surgery with lower morbility and mortality rates. In this pictorial essay, we aim at providing an overview of the technical approaches, the main clinical indications and complications of CT-guided percutaneous drainage, in order to provide a practical guide for interventional radiologists, with a review of the recent literature. The focus will be the CT-guidance, preferred when the interposition of viscera, vascular and skeletal structures, counteracts the ultrasound guidance.
